Involving Parents in Student Success
“The only difference between a Senior in High School and a Freshman in College is 3 months”
Students who are, from the start of their first semester, conscientiously engaged in their academic courses and involved with campus life are more likely to stay in school. Parents can play a major role in assisting their student in attaining academic success by providing an appropriate level of support, especially during the critical first month of the first semester.
The Student Success Center (SSC) has programs designed to help parents work together with their students to encourage success. This site offers many suggestions on how parents can be positively involved with their student. Working together will encourage the student to grow in a supportive and challenging environment. The SSC is located on the third floor of the Vining Library and you can contact Sid Cooper, SSC Programs Manager, for additional information at 304.442.3853 or scooper@mail.wvu.edu
It is important to be excited for the new adventures your student will have in college, but the relationship is changing, and it will be necessary to let go and let your student expand and learn on his/her own. Sometimes students can develop a false sense of independence as they start their college career, thinking this means never asking for help, but with your active partnership, we can effectively address issues before they become serious.
